Gold Panning and Tours
Over at Reed Gold Mine, visitors of all ages can embark on a tour within the restored underground mine tunnels. A state historic site, Reed Gold Mine is the United States’ first documented discovery of gold, and visitors and check out cool exhibits and historic mining equipment on display. Walk trails around the property and, between April and October, try panning for gold yourself!
Award-Winning Wines
Adults in the group will love Rocky River Vineyards, a 45-acre, family-owned and -operated vineyard. Growing muscadine grapes since 2003, this vineyard offers wine tastings, as well as samples of wine slushies, a perfect drink on a summer day. Guests can also enjoy wine flights, charcuterie and time roaming the vineyard for pictures.

Scenic Trails
There’s no shortage of beautiful trails in and around Midland. Reed Gold Mine boasts its own walking trails, in which visitors pass mining areas and archaeological sites. The Lower Hill trail includes a long boardwalk with views of Little Meadow Creek, where a 17-pound yellow rock was discovered in 1799. Other trails in Midland include Pharr Family Preserve Trail, a 1.7-mile, out-and-back trail alongside Rocky River. The trail also includes a canoe and kayak launch, and offers prime spots for wildlife, wildflower and tree viewing.
At Riverbend Farm Trail, families can enjoy smooth surfaces along Riverbend Farm. Open space and beautiful views await, and the trail also includes an access point to the Rocky River Blueway kayak launch. Rob Wallace Park, another outdoor destination, features 6 miles of trails, as well as a range of amenities like a boardwalk, butterfly garden, playground, wetland pond and more.
