4 of the Best Family-Friendly Martinique Beaches

Destinations / Caribbean

It may look like other Caribbean islands with its long golden beaches, palm trees and tropical flowers, but Martinique is part of France. You can have buttery croissants for breakfast, pay for them in euros and French is the official language, but the lifestyle is distinctly Caribbean. Family travelers here can enjoy multiple cultures in a tropical beach setting.

Tourist facilities — hotels, resorts, dining and sports opportunities — are centered around the island’s beaches. These are among the most popular for families:

Pointe du Bout

Close to Fort-de-France, Martinique’s capital, and within easy reach of the airport, Pointe du Bout is a good center for water sports and boat trips around Fort-de-France Bay. Families can take kayak tours to explore mangrove forests or go on a dolphin-watching cruise from Pointe du Bout or nearby Poterie des Trois-Ilets (also a good place to shop for local crafts). Just west of Pointe du Bout, Anse Mitan is one of the island’s best beaches. Pointe du Bout is lively, with plenty of dining and social life.

Diamond Beach

Near the town of Sainte-Luce, in the southern part of the island, long Diamond Beach is a favorite for families because of its gentle slope and shallow water where kids can play safely. Close to the beach, budget-friendly studio apartments with kitchens are handy for families.

Les Salines

Also on the southern tip of Martinique, the popular Les Salines is half a mile long, and has plenty of shaded areas to spread your beach towels under its fringe of coconut palms. Les Salines can be crowded with families on weekends, but tends to be a little more tranquil during the week. Local vendors sell lunch and drinks behind the beach.

Sainte-Anne

Sprinkled with palm-fringed coves, Sainte-Anne is the island’s southernmost village and one of its prettiest. You’ll find shops, restaurants and a craft market, but the main attractions are its beaches. La Pointe Marin is a good one for young children, with a gentle slope of shallow water. The sea is also calm at Plage des Salines, which has shaded areas and lounge chairs for rent.
