Sunny skies; sandy beaches; and a relaxed, kid-friendly way of life make the Greek islands a favorite of family travelers. Ancient sites, family-friendly tavernas, ferries for island hopping and white villages that look as though they’d stepped from storybooks are all added enticements. While there’s something to like about all of them, these Greek islands are especially popular with families.
Corfu
If you watched the series The Durrells in Corfu, you already know this island has one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines. The northern shore, where the series filmed, also has the best beaches for children, with warm, shallow waters. In the south is the main town of Corfu, with a maze of narrow streets, shops and places to while away the two-hour break in the late afternoon when shops and attractions close everywhere.
Crete
You’ll want to read the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur to the kids before going to Knossos, where you’ll certainly want to visit one of Greece’s major archaeological sites, the palace of King Minos. As you explore the partially reconstructed ruins, kids will learn about the Minoan culture that thrived here more than 3,000 years ago.
After the history lesson and scary mythical monsters, take a boat trip to Dikteon Cave to see the rock formations inside and hear the legends about its depth. The best kid-friendly beaches are at Chania on the west side of the island, and the lagoons of Elafonisi, with pink sands, are also a must-visit. You’ll find water sports — kayaking, windsurfing, SUP and snorkeling — everywhere.
Naxos
Known for glorious golden sand beaches surrounding the island, Naxos is a favorite of European families who value its crystal swimming waters and the absence of self-contained resorts. Look for the best beaches on the western side of the island, especially toward the southwest. Teens may prefer lively Paliohori, where there’s always activity on the beach.
Take an excursion to see caves where pirates hid, and climb to the medieval Naxos Castle built by Venetians, who once conquered the island. If your family is feeling energetic, follow one of the many walking trails to discover ancient mountain villages where time seems to have stood still.
Kos
The dormant volcanoes that gave Kos the black sand on its northern beaches also give it naturally heated swimming pools at Bros Therma hot springs. Head to the southern part of the island for white-sand beaches. At Paradise Beach you’ll find warm, shallow water for the kids to play in, and lounge chairs with umbrellas to rent so you can watch them in comfort.
The island is scattered with reminders of the cultures that thrived here, the largest of which is the ancient hospital of Asklepion. Kids will like visiting a relic of more recent origin, the island’s last working windmill. You can see it in operation and buy goodies made from grains it grinds.
