About a three-hour train ride from the capital city of Lisbon, Faro sits on the southern coast of Portugal and has been the capital of the Algarve region since 1756. Let’s take a look at five kid-friendly activities for you and your family to enjoy during a visit.
The Cathedral Bell Tower
For views of the city, visit the Cathedral in Largo da Sé. Built in 1251, the cathedral houses remarkable collections of art from the 17th and 18th centuries, but what may delight your family most is climbing the bell tower. From the top, you will be able to see incredible views of the city, as well as the estuary.
Manuel Bívar Gardens
A terrific place to take a break while exploring Faro is at Manuel Bívar Gardens, which sits between the city’s dock, Arco da Vila (Town Arch) and the beginning of Rua de Santo António. The park is known for its terraces, wide walkways and palm trees, with views of Faro Island in the background. Mingle with the locals, grab a bite to eat and relish a bit of relaxation before continuing your city exploration.
Rua de Santo António
After some time in Manuel Bívar Gardens, venture down Rua de Santo António, a pedestrian street paved with cobblestones. One of the city’s busiest spots, the street is lined with shops and restaurants, and it was here an influential Jewish community was established in the 19th century.
Cape Santa Maria Lighthouse
Take your family to new heights when you climb to the Cape Santa Maria Lighthouse, the southernmost point on mainland Portugal. Follow the 143 steps of the spiral staircase to the top of the lighthouse, where you will find an open-air viewing platform. From here, take in the panoramic views of La Paloma and the seemingly never-ending ocean. A fun fact to share with your family: Faro is Portuguese for lighthouse!
Deserta Island
In the summertime, a day on the beach on Deserta Island will leave your family feeling like they are on their own private island. Accessible only by boat, which departs from Cars da Porta Nova, you can easily spend a day of rest and play under the warm Portuguese sun.
