You may not associate hostels with family-friendly travel experiences, but there are, in fact, many European hostels built around connection, shared experiences and families. In fact, a recent report from Booking.com found accommodation searches by families are up 8 percent year-over-year. These six design-led hostels lead the way in redefining family travel across Europe:
Circus Hostel in Berlin, Germany
Located just steps from Rosenthaler Platz, this hostel pairs circus-themed design with upscale options like two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens, en-suite bathrooms and private balconies. The hostel is also home to a microbrewery and offers free walking tours for parents who need a break.
TOC Hostel Madrid in Madrid, Spain
TOC Hostel Madrid blends history with modern amenities. The hostel offers spacious, private rooms and apartments for group and family stays, as well as lively communal spaces, a children’s play area and round-the-clock reception. It’s also within proximity to Madrid’s Puerta del Sol.

Bunk Amsterdam in Amsterdam, Netherlands
This hostel sits within the beautifully restored former Saint Rita Church and features distinctive rooms, an artist-in-residence program, locally sourced restaurant, recording studio and calendar of more than 20 events each month. Families can expect innovative, cube-shaped rooms for up to five guests.
Steel House Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark
Steel House Copenhagen was inspired by New York’s industrial loft aesthetic, spanning a rooftop swimming pool (rare for the city!), spacious family suites with private bathrooms, and inviting communal areas. The hostel lies within a short distance of Central Station and Tivoli Gardens, too.
KEX Hostel & Hotel in Reykjavík, Iceland
This hostel is set within a former biscuit factory along the city’s harbor, furnished almost entirely with found objects and salvaged materials. The hostel was renovated in 2025 and offers dedicated family rooms, cribs on request and free stays for children under 3.
The Indipendente Hostel & Suites in Lisbon, Portugal
This property offers a fresh take on urban hostels, preserving the building’s architectural heritage through tiled floors and original moldings while introducing contemporary spaces, balconies with River Tagus views and generous suites. There’s also a lively restaurant and bar.
