Destinations / North America

The Steel City provides families with an unexpectedly delightful Midwestern getaway. While you maybe haven’t considered Pittsburgh for your next weekend jaunt or a short spring break trip, this city has plenty to offer adults and children alike, making it a worthwhile contender on your travel bucket list.

History and Learning

With more than 250 years of fascinating history, Pittsburgh puts it all on display, welcoming visitors with an array of impressive museums and historic sites.

There are four Carnegie museums in Pittsburgh — the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum. The latter is likely the most unique out of the group, with the largest collection of Warhol art and archives in the world across seven floors. Explore, touch, interact and create at this world-class museum suitable for all ages.

The Fort Ligonier Museum displays Pittsburgh’s long history and its role in the Seven Years’ War with a new exhibit on the 1758 battle of Loyalhanna.

If you’re short on time, ride the 140-year-old Duquesne Incline car, for not only a historic experience as you learn about this transportation mode’s former life, but also gorgeous views of the Pittsburgh skyline and three rivers.

Sports

Of course, there’s no shortage of sports and similar activities in Pittsburgh. PNC Park has been called one of the best baseball stadiums in America for its picturesque views and overall experience. The Pittsburgh Pirates provide a perfect summer’s evening out with the family. Then, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins boast passionate fan bases, so be sure to buy your tickets as soon as you know you’ll be in town for an evening of football or hockey you’ll not soon forget.

Outdoor Adventures

Pittsburgh is extremely walkable, and you’ll find you can easily get just about anywhere on foot. Take advantage of the area’s accessibility and enjoy the many outdoor adventures waiting both in the city center and on its outskirts. Point State Park is just a quick walk from downtown and gives you great views of the skyline and river, as well as the sporting arenas with little effort. This is also where the Great Allegheny Passage begins, a 150-mile trail stretching all the way to Maryland and then to Washington, D.C. While you probably don’t want to go quite that far, you can enjoy the many area trails and hiking, as well as the bicycle rentals available throughout the city.
