Destinations / North America

Have an aspiring fisherman or woman in the family? Take family travel to Fort Myers for endless fishing opportunities and experiences. The destination is known for its diverse water environments like estuaries, mangroves and seagrass flats, which provide bountiful areas for fish like snook, redfish and tarpon. Below are some of Fort Myers fishing hot spots along with some useful tips from local fishermen:

Sanibel Causeway

This 3-mile-long series of three bridges and two man-made causeway islands is the perfect place to fish thanks to its variety of species like tarpon, red grouper and small goliath grouper that like to hang around the bridges. Local fisherman suggest fishing off the middle bridge or the bridge closest to Sanibel Island for the best results.

Estero Bay

Thanks to its mangrove-lined flats and waterways, Estero Bay is home to fish habitats and nurseries throughout its shallow waters and seagrass beds. Here, you can catch redfish and snook with the “search and stalk” approach, which includes hugging the mangroves, casting parallel to the shoreline and remaining quiet to catch fish off guard. Local fisherman advise, “If you catch a ladyfish throughout the destination, cut them up and use them as chunk bait for the Redfish and Snook in Estero Bay’s mangroves.”

Charlotte Harbor

Charlotte Harbor is a year-round favorite for backcountry fishing and catches like snook, redfish and tarpon. The area features shallow water flats and mangrove shorelines, making it a desirable area for these fish. Local fishermen suggest instead of buying pinfish bait at the tackle store, cast a net and catch your own.

Gasparilla Island

This fishing paradise offers a variety of fishing opportunities for all skill levels. The island is only accessible by boat, so plan your day accordingly.

Boca Grande Fishing Pier

Just north of Gasparilla Island, at Boca Grande Fishing Pier, travelers can catch snapper, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead and sometimes cobia. According to local fishermen, this is a good spot for those who don’t have a boat.

Summer will be here before you know it, which means you might be in the midst of planning your summer family travel to Europe. Things used to be fairly simple — buy plane tickets, book rooms and pack some bags. But there is a new rule in effect for a few months now, and you’ll want to familiarize yourself with it before you book those already overpriced (and only getting more expensive) flights.

This Airline Stopover Program is Great for Families

My children and I travel to Europe frequently. For many of our trips, we take Icelandair. Icelandair is comfortable and affordable. Additionally, they offer excellent connectivity between several cities in the United States and European hot spots. Even better, the airline offers perks for families, including discounted fares for children, activity boxes and special meals.
