For families seeking history and culture in a less-touristed city, Córdoba, Argentina, packs a punch. Known for its Spanish colonial architecture, 17th-century churches and city-meets-rural atmosphere, Córdoba blends culture and nature for budget travelers and families of all ages.
While choosing a place to stay, look for hotels offering family packages and group discounts. Generally speaking, hotel accommodations are on the more affordable side and shouldn’t be difficult to lock down for a fair price, but do a little shopping around for the best family-friendly stay and narrow your options from there.
If your hotel includes breakfast, take advantage and fill up (for free) with the family before heading into the city. For those looking to explore a bit of the local scene, opt for your most important meal of the day at Mercado Norte. The local market opens 7 a.m.–7 p.m., five days a week; 7 a.m.–2 p.m., Saturday; and closed Sunday. It’s conveniently located within walking distance of most hotels and attractions, offering fresh produce, local goods, authentic cuisine and various oddities for fair prices.
Spend the day walking around, seeing the sights and enjoying the beautiful, old-world architecture. There’s little chance you will need a car service, but if you want to enjoy city tours and various excursions, discuss with your hotel concierge — another perk — and see which activities and local attractions are best for your family. They may even have a few pro tips for unique attractions.
Take your family on a day tour of Córdoba, exploring the city by foot, for free, and stop at the many green areas in the city. The many local parks, including Park España, Plaza del Bicentario and Sarmiento Park, are all free and within walking distance of Zoo Córdoba and Museo Emilio Caraffa.
Take in the arts and culture of the museum and stroll along the museum trails before heading to the Jesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba. This World Heritage Site is open to the public every day but Monday, and is also known as Museum in Alta Gracia.
The city is literally filled with free, or close to it, attractions all offering centuries-old history and important landmarks. Enjoy all the free fun you can, because you’re going to want to save your pennies for a night out.
