It’s that time of year — from Nov. 10 to Dec. 23, THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride is chugging into the station at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. More than 14,000 cups of hot cocoa will be served, and an estimated 14,500 silver bells will be handed out by Santa during this season’s event, while a cast of around four dozen actors and singers bring The Polar Express book by author Chris Van Allsburg to life.
The vintage 1928 Denver & Rio Grande Western locomotive No. 491 and the historical 1899 Rio Grande Southern locomotive No. 20 will provide the setting, steaming more than 275 miles this year during the duration of THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride season. The experience comprises three parts: First, passengers enjoy a cabaret-style show at the newly renovated THE POLAR EXPRESS Pavilion, featuring the “Hot Chocolate” song and dance. While cookies and cocoa are consumed, guests will enjoy a performance based on Van Allsburg’s story.
Next, head outside to watch as THE POLAR EXPRESS arrives with whistles blowing and bells ringing, the steam-filled darkness suddenly illuminated by the train’s headlights. The conductor welcomes everyone on board, and the train leaves the station, bound for the (imaginary) North Pole. Singing and dancing elves accompany passengers along the journey, which ends at the station with a chance to visit with Santa, explore his workshop and receive the gift of a Silver Bell. Tickets for the experience are currently on sale here.
