Destinations / Europe

This past June, a new art museum opened in Amsterdam, Netherlands, constructed solely to encourage children’s creative processes. KiMu Children’s Art Museum aims to inspire, connect and challenge visitors of all ages. Here, the development of the creative brain is central, and children are encouraged to find their own language. The result is a museum working in a process-oriented way.

Currently, the museum has an exhibition called Parallel Processes, in which 70 children (ages 4–15) and three artists showcase their creative processes. All children and artists used the same materials to reflect how different ages have different ways of looking, thinking and imagining.

The exhibition displays the results, as well as the sketches, experiments, doubts and discoveries leading to the final product. The exhibition is on view until January 2027.

Tickets to the museum include access to the exhibition, Studio of Light, various interactive stations (ages 0–18) and studio experience for children ages 2–18.

KiMu Children’s Art Museum is open every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m.–6 p.m. on Wednesdays and until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays). The museum lies in Amsterdam-Noord, a waterfront quarter in northern Amsterdam with various other museums, restaurants, galleries and more.
