The island of Newfoundland off the eastern shore of Canada is one of those destinations everyone should experience in their lifetime. The quiet, laid-back island is the perfect place for families to slow down and enjoy each other and the world around them. But don’t let the peace and quiet fool you — there is plenty to do on Newfoundland to make it the family trip of a lifetime.
Whale Watching
Whales are so plentiful around the shores of Newfoundland you are sure to see some during your trip, even if you don’t want to leave land. There are great whale-watching cruises taking visitors to see these magnificent creatures up close, but there are also plenty of key locations around the island offering prime viewing as they pass through the waters. Species like orcas, humpback whales, blue whales, sperm whales and minke whales, along with several species of porpoise and dolphin, make appearances throughout the year.
Iceberg Viewing
No trip to Newfoundland would be complete without observing the impressive icebergs dotting the seascape. During spring and summer, visitors can spot these monumental ice formations as they travel south from the Arctic Circle. As they pass through what is known as Iceberg Alley, six different types of icebergs in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors can be easily seen from land or sea. Boating excursions offer the chance to see both icebergs and whales up close, while places like Twillingate, Bonavista, St. John and Witless Bay offer great viewing opportunities from the shore.
Enjoy the Colors of St. John’s Jellybean Row Houses
Downtown St. John is known for its colorful rows of houses. The bright colors pop, creating a visual phenomenon that contributes to the unique culture of the city. During your stay, be sure to spend some time wandering around town to enjoy the beautiful splashes of color bringing personality and vibrancy to this fascinating little town.
Visit Arches Provincial Park
Found on the western shore, this beautiful seaside park features beautiful rock formations, making for fun family memories and great photo opportunities. Visually stunning arches created by centuries of sea waves are the perfect backdrop for walking the beach or enjoying a picnic.
