Destinations / North America

If you haven’t been to Little Havana, then you haven’t really been to Miami. No trip to the city is complete without spending a little time in this vibrant neighborhood. Also known as Calle Ocho for the name of the street that runs through the heart of the neighborhood (Southwest Eighth Street), this area is a dynamic section of the city filled with vibrant colors, lively music and mouthwatering aromas of Cuban food coming from many restaurants lining the streets.

There is plenty to see and do while visiting Little Havanna, but the best way to experience the neighborhood is through food. The buildings are adorned with colorful murals that depict life in the neighborhood as well as the creative force behind the people who call it home. While you stroll, you’ll find street vendors selling handicrafts and treats, but you’ll definitely want to stop in the shops and do some souvenir shopping, too.

Along the way, be sure to take some photos with one of the many giant fiberglass rooster statues each decorated with their own unique personality. As a universal symbol of new beginnings, the rooster is a testament to many immigrants who settled in the neighborhood to build a new life.

Spend a little time in Domino Park, formally known as Maximo Gomez Park, where locals gather to pass time socializing and playing dominoes. This is a great way to catch a glimpse into life in Little Havana, but you’ll also want to stop to grab some food at a restaurant like El Cristo Restaurant, where you can get a refreshing mojito while enjoying traditional Cuban dishes such as a Cubano sandwich or ropa vieja. There are ice cream shops, cigar shops, music shops and more to explore, but the experience of strolling through the neighborhood and taking in the vibe of Little Havana is one that will help define your family’s visit to Miami.
