Family travelers in Switzerland can take advantage of the Swiss Family Card, allowing children under age 16 to travel free when accompanied by a parent holding a Swiss Travel Pass. The complimentary Swiss Family Card is available when buying a Travel Pass at any rail station.
The Swiss rail network makes getting around Switzerland easy, even reaching small towns and connecting to mountain cog rails and tramways. Three of the most popular of these mountain rides — Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos — are included in the rail pass, entitling holders to discounts as high as 50 percent.
The Travel Pass is also valid on buses and boat travel on Lake Lucerne, Lake Geneva and Lake Brienz, as well as for the popular Panorama Trains (although there is a charge for seat reservations on these).
An additional bonus for passholders is free admission to more than 500 museums in Switzerland. These include the castle of Chateau Chillon on Lake Geneva ($14.50 for adults, $8 for children) and the historic open air museum village of Ballenberg in Brienz ($35 for adults, $17.50 for children). Other museums popular with families, such as Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt, Glacier Garden in Lucerne, the Medieval castle in Thun and Alimentarium food museum in Vevey, are also included.
