Luxury

Peru is known for its blockbuster attractions, including the Sacred Valley, the Maras salt flats and, especially, Machu Picchu. But if the idea of navigating the trip with kids seems daunting, Cox & Kings, a luxury travel company, can tailor the trip to meet the needs of your whole family and take the stress out of the logistics of vacation planning.

An immersive, nine-day Family Adventure in Peru: Land of the Incas travels through the country’s Sacred Valley and offers flexible activities that can be tailored to match the various needs of your family members. High-adrenaline teens and adults, for example, can hike the last few miles of the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu, while those who take a more laid-back approach to sightseeing can enjoy the views from the scenic Vistadome train.

This Andean journey also includes touring historic Lima, the mystical Sacred Valley and the Maras salt flats, with immersive local cultural experiences and dining on gourmet Peruvian cuisine throughout.

The tour kicks off in Lima, where passengers will explore the beachy neighborhood of Barranco and where you can browse local galleries, shops and museums, many located in former colonial mansions. In the Sacred Valley, you can tuck into a picnic lunch on the shores of Huaypo Lagoon, catered by the celebrated chefs of La Cicciolina, named Cusco’s best restaurant for seven years straight; or meet locals in the Tierra de los Yachaqs and learn to cook a traditional Andean dish from local ingredients. You can also visit the natural salt mines of Maras, opt for a hike on the Inca trail or visit the Incan town of Ollantaytambo, once used by Emperor Pachacuti as a royal estate and still inhabited today.

You will have plenty of time to visit Machu Picchu and can choose from various ways to take in the ruins, including a strenuous morning guided hike up Huayna Picchu. You can also relax with afternoon tea aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham train to Cusco, where you will sample a South American-inspired dinner, and visit the Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman, a stone fortress built in the 12th and 13th centuries.

You can also browse the Mercado de San Pedro in Cusco, a market where locals go to buy wares, enjoy a farewell dinner and fly back to Lima for an overnight and the return flight.

The tour is priced from $5,295 for departures starting April 4, and itineraries are customizable.
