Travel Tips

Choosing a new credit card with travel benefits can be daunting. With so many options, promotions and conflicting services, it can be a challenge to compare them all. Sifting through the flashy commercials and over-the-top offers, you’ll find a few tried-and-true options. You may know the names, but not the benefits.

Take a closer look and compare for yourself with our list of suggestions.

United TravelBank Card – Best Value

Flying domestically or internationally, you may find yourself on a United Airlines aircraft. Take advantage of the great offers promoted by the United TravelBank Card, including discounted tickets, in-flight savings and 1.5–25 percent cashback on purchases.

The Perks: United TravelBank Cardholders receive $150 in United TravelBank cash after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months — flying with a family of three or more, consider it done. Cardholders also receive 2 percent in TravelBank Cash per dollar they spend with United Airlines, 1.5 percent on all other purchases and $1 whenever used toward a ticket for a United-operated flight.

Additionally, users receive 25 percent back when using the TravelBank Card on any United flight, including WiFi, food and drinks. Enjoy no international transaction fees and trip insurance.

Annual Fee: $0

APR: 17.74–24.74 percent

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

For those with excellent credit, Capital One Venture Card should be on your radar. Cardholders enjoy miles per dollar spent on every purchase, including hotels.

The Perks: Capital One Venture cardholders earn two-times the miles (unlimited) per dollar on every purchase — everyday purchases included. Rewards also include 10 times the miles on participating hotels. New cardmembers enjoy 50,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of opening.

Additionally, cardholders earn up to a $100 credit toward Global Entry and/or TSA PreCheck with purchases and enjoy zero foreign transaction fees. Read more about card benefits and fine print here, or just play around with the sliding monthly spending and miles earned feature.

Annual Fee: $95 (first year free)

APR: 14.74–24.74 percent

Chase Sapphire Preferred

For families that travel frequently, enjoy lounge access and vary their travel habits, Chase Sapphire Preferred is a safe bet.

The Perks: Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders receive 50,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of opening — a bit more than competitors, but with partners like United and Hyatt, it’s easily done. Users can transfer points to the Southwest Rapid Rewards program, earn two points per dollar on all travel and dining purchases and one point per dollar on everything else.

Additionally, points can be transferred to the card’s various travel partners, including United MileagePlus, Marriott Rewards, World of Hyatt and more. Read more about financing, pricing and fine print here.

Annual Fee: $95 (waived the first year)

APR: 17.74–24.74 percent

Dine on the Ocean Floor in New Brunswick, Canada

The astonishing tides of the Bay of Fundy offer plenty of experiences for family travelers in Maritime Canada. The newest of these is the chance to eat dinner on the floor of the ocean, seated beneath towering cliffs and tide-carved sea stacks. Return the next day to see your former “dining room” under 40 feet of ocean.

United Airlines Celebrates its First Class of United Aviate Graduates

As the only major U.S. airline to own a flight school, United Airlines already hit a major milestone, and now the carrier celebrates another important — and historic — step as the inaugural class of United Aviate Academy pilots graduates, leading the next generation of aviators. The 51 students in the graduating class were majority, at 80 percent, women and people of color — another stride toward United’s goal of training 5,000 new pilots by 2030 with half women or POC.

Introduce the Family to Saudi Culture at the AlUla Camel Cup

Visiting Saudi Arabia means introducing the family to a country rich in culture and history, giving the kids experiences they won’t get anywhere else in the world. I spent several years living as an expat in this desert kingdom, and the experiences I had were not only completely unique but also helped shape my perspective on the world today.
