Regenerative tourism offers conscientious travelers the opportunity to visit bucket-list destinations with a sustainable approach designed to replenish and restore the culture and nature of those places. The idea came about following the pandemic lockdown when over-touristed destinations began to see a rejuvenation amid halted global travel.

Red Sea Global has created a luxury destination blending luxury travel to one of the world’s last hidden treasures — Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. The brand is in the midst of creating a series of resorts to allow visitors to explore this captivating region through thoughtful design and sustainability measures that work to preserve the native habitat, local wildlife and native cultures of Saudi Arabia.

It is no wonder the location was chosen for this project. The Red Sea is home to the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef and some of the most exotic sea life in existence. Spanning more than 28,000 square kilometers, it features some of the world’s most exotic marine life, dormant volcanoes, historic sites, and seemingly endless beaches with sweeping sand dunes and stunning rock formations.

The first of several Red Sea Global resorts already opened, with Six Senses Southern Dunes, the Red Sea Resort opening in November 2023. Six Senses guests enjoy life inside of an oasis with the stunning backdrop of the Hijaz Mountains in a location virtually untouched by tourists.

As the first LEED platinum-certified resort in the Kingdom, Six Senses is 100 percent powered by solar energy, uses native plant species to reduce irrigation water use by 60 percent, follows a plastic-free policy, and uses copper-silver ionization in its pools to eliminate the need for chemical treatments. Water is sourced from the resort’s own water plant. Food is sourced from local farms and the resort activates partnerships with the surrounding communities to create economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

The St. Regis Red Sea Resort brings the brand’s commitment to sustainability to a private island in the Red Sea where guests can enjoy the pristine natural beauty in a setting that doesn’t compromise on luxury or first-class service. Ninety overwater and beachfront villas give you a front-row view of the Red Sea, where bespoke service and amenities like a Children’s Club, a high-tech fitness center and private butler service let the family enjoy in the lap of luxury.

Immersive experiences let you enjoy activities like snorkeling or diving in the Red Sea to discover the coral and sea life up close, or taking a conservation tour through the dunes with a local expert. Guests can discover a beautiful landscape and the many ways in which it can be protected and preserved.

Both properties, just the beginning of the big plans Red Sea Global has in store for the region, are an excellent way to introduce the family to regenerative tourism. While a calm serenity may hang over the desert, it is teeming with life and culture that need to be preserved, protected and respected, and Red Sea Global is working to do just that while letting families experience one of the world’s last frontiers.
