Looking for the next destination for family travel? Head for Great Falls, Montana, a town blending history, industry and creativity while still having that Montana feel. Expect an unforgettable experience in a town valuing authenticity and connection to the land.
Outdoor adventure is at the heart of Great Falls. The Missouri River runs through the town and has five waterfalls within a 10-mile stretch, a sight that has stunned adventurers for years. Check out the 53-mile River’s Edge Trail, which connects travelers to nature and culture through parks, murals and riverbanks. Fishermen, paddleboarders, kayakers and mountain bikers have a field day with all the opportunities to experience Montana’s legendary wilderness.
The destination is also located between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, making it the perfect homebase for park-bound travelers. Along the way to each park, travelers can see stunning sites such as Great Plains, river valleys, national forests and multiple waterfalls.
Great Falls is known as the Western Art Capital of the World, and for good reason, too. C.M. Russell Museum honors “America’s Original Cowboy Artist,” highlighting the most intimate collection of his works and celebrating the town’s connection to Western heritage. Travelers can also walk around town to catch a glimpse of the more than 50 public murals and local arts, adding character to the community. The Downtown Art Walk is the best way to see the best pieces of art.
History is a big part of the town and community. The Lewis & Clark Expedition spent 31 days here in 1805. Today, travelers can walk in their footsteps at Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center or head to Sulphur Springs, where Sacagawea is believed to have recovered from an illness. And don’t forget to visit First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park for a glimpse at Indigenous history.
