Los Angeles has no shortage of ways to entertain a family, but many of its most popular museums are so well-known, they can get pretty crowded, especially during peak times. Popular spots like the La Brea Tar Pits, Grammy Museum and California Science Center are always great choices whether it’s your first time visiting the city or you are a long-time local, but there are also some incredible museums that often fly under the radar and will give family travelers just as much entertainment, art and history, if not more. The next time you and the family are in the City of Angels, be sure to check out these underrated gems.
Avila Adobe
Avila Adobe lies in the heart of Los Angeles on Olvera Street. The building isn’t just a museum honoring the living history of the city, it is also the oldest standing building in the city, dating back to the early days when the city was just beginning to develop its own fascinating personality. Filled with artifacts and décor from the time, it’s not just a time capsule of Los Angeles, but also a glimpse into the city’s Mexican heritage.
It’s open Tuesday–Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free for all ages. The museum is small but mighty, and once you’re done discovering its treasures, you can continue to explore the city’s Mexican heritage at the shops and restaurants along Olvera Street.
Museum of Neon Art
At MONA, the family will love the collection of neon, electric and kinetic art that bridges the gap between science and creativity. Displays include nearly 200 neon signs, a collection of neon clocks, a wide variety of neon artwork and even a photograph collection that beautifully captures the beauty of neon art.
The museum, open Thursday–Sunday, is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. In addition to the collections housed within the museum itself, you can also sign up for a neon tour of the city.
Petersen Automotive Museum
Car museums don’t always top the list of must-sees for families, unless the whole family is into cars. But at Peterson, there truly is something for every member of the family. Cars of all shapes and sizes are housed in this multistory museum, and the collection represents the entire history of the automotive industry. From Lightning McQueen to the Batmobile, concept cars to unusual car accessories, you’ll find a bit of everything.
