St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and The Beaches are a well-known multicultural destination and it offers the perfect spot for family travelers to explore the heritage of African Americans in the area — and in time for Black History Month.
A must-do experience is Fort Mose Historic State Park’s Flight to Freedom event Feb. 26–28, with tours and demonstrations by historians, reenactors and community members. The fort tells the stories of those who risked everything to flee enslavement on a British plantation to reach the free Black settlement of Fort Mose.

I Lived Here, As Well: The Final Chapter Tour, at Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, offers a look at the experiences of Black Americans that once lived there, Feb. 5–28.
Guided experiences highlighting the voices of St. Johns County’s African American community include History of Butler Beach Walk on Feb. 11, exploring the life of Frank B. Butler, a St. Augustine visionary who purchased and opened Butler’s Beach for African Americans to enjoy during segregation. Rails, Roots & Freedom: African American Stories of St. Johns County, Feb. 25, held at Fort Mose Historic State Park, brings together local historians and community leaders to discuss the area’s history.

Use the Black History App to explore the area and create your own immersive tour to places such as Lincolnville Historic District and Dr. Robert B. Hayling Freedom Park.
