Los Angeles is a city rich in local history, culture and architecture that many visitors on family travel often miss as they speed off to enjoy the area’s many attractions. Luckily, Los Angeles Conservancy offers a great way to explore the city’s fascinating history with a series of walking tours that give you an intimate look at what makes the city tick.
Docent-led tours let you get on your feet so you can enjoy some fresh air and stretch your legs while you discover the heart of Los Angeles. These excursions take you to some of the city’s most iconic locations for a glimpse of daily life, from the city’s past to its present.
Itineraries like the Union Station Tour take you through one of country’s last train stations built during the golden age of rail travel. This working station is not only an iconic landmark, but also an architectural marvel of Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival design. The Art Deco Tour introduces you to some of the city’s most defining examples of its architectural history from the 1920s and 30s, such as the Oviatt Building and Eastern Columbia Lofts. The Historic Downtown Tour take you to famous sites around Pershing Square, such as the Bradbury Building and the historic Angels Flight railway that takes passengers on a short ride up Bunker Hill.
The tours, offered every Saturday, run 1.5–2.5 hours and cost $15 for adults and $10 for kids 17 and under. Certain tours, such as the Art Deco Tour and the Union Station Tour, are wheelchair accessible, and every tour requires an advanced reservation.
