North America

Along with bright autumn foliage, harvest season is a time for pumpkins, hay rides, apple picking and corn mazes. In their fall weekend travels, families can combine foliage-viewing with activities fun for the whole family.

One of New England’s oldest corn mazes is at Sherman Farm at Center Conway in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The elaborate maze, which changes each year, has three different levels, making it fun for all ages. Hayrides, P.Y.O. pumpkins and a farm-themed play area promise several hours of fun.

In New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, Moulton Farm has been the go-to place for pumpkin picking for generations, and a few years ago, the farm added a corn maze. Special weekend events bring more harvest fun, and the doughnut stand is a hit with all ages.

At Red Apple Farm, in Phillipston, Massachusetts, kids can pick apples, choose a pumpkin, meet farm animals and go for hayrides. An outdoor barbecue and brick pizza oven make it a popular place for a day’s outing.

You’ll find hayrides and pumpkin picking on Cape Cod at Coonamessett Farm and Tony Andrews Farm, both in Falmouth. And from mid-October, Chatham’s Pumpkin People in the Park brings crowds to see dozens of pumpkin figures created by local businesses, schools, organizations and individuals.

Watch local amateur and professional artists carve and sculpt giant pumpkins at The Great Pumpkin Carve in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Kids can paint their own pumpkin and go for a hayride. A hayride at Arasapha Farms Harvest Hayride in Glen Mills leads to the corn maze.

The northern and Middle Atlantic states don’t have a monopoly on pumpkins and crop mazes. In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jackson’s Orchard & Nursery hosts its Pumpkin Festival with hayrides to the pumpkin patch, a corn maze, a pick-your-own apple orchard, pony rides and a petting zoo. Don’t leave without sampling their caramel apples.

Kids can meet cows, get lost in a cow-themed corn maze and take a tour of the dairy farm at Chaney’s Dairy Barn, also in Bowling Green. After discovering where milk and cream come from, kids can then choose from a boggling selection of more than 50 ice cream flavors made right there at the dairy.

Why It’s Important to Teach Kids How to Use Maps

The next time you’re on a family travel road trip — even a short one — try giving your kids an old-fashioned paper road map. If you don’t have one, your nearest visitor center will likely have highway maps for your state. Show them where you are and where you are going, and suggest they follow along on the map as you travel.
