One of those far-off dream destinations on most travelers’ bucket lists, New Zealand has much more than natural beauty drawing in tourists from all over the world. The vibrant nightlife, relaxing daytime activities and active attractions are more than enough to keep the most diversely interested family entertained — not to mention, to say the landscape is picturesque would be an understatement.
For those already in the know with a trip booked this fall, here are some local activities and festivals to add to your list of things to do with the family.
Graffiato Street Art Festival in Lake Taupō: Oct. 20–22
Over Labour Weekend in New Zealand, Lake Taupō’s Street Art Festival is the main event. Whether interested in the vibrant works of top local artists and urban culture or just an excuse for a street party, this event is a must-visit.
Celebrating its eighth-annual year, The Graffiato showcases 10 city walls designated to be painted by 10 local artists over the course of three days, Oct. 20–22. Adding on to the more than 80 murals already displayed throughout the city, Lake Taupō’s back alleys, street corners and side streets are like an open-air museum.
Arm yourselves with a walking tour map, grab a coffee and some snacks, and walk around town with the kids, enjoying the art. Make it a da trip enroute to other New Zealand towns or stay the night and take in more of the city’s incredible offerings.
Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival in Taranaki: Oct. 26–Nov. 4
For the more botanically interested, Taranaki Garden Trust boasts an illustrious collection of gardens, walkways and vintage farming attractions. During the 14th-annual Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival, however, guests of all ages and sizes explore the homes and gardens of the region’s finest florists.
The 10-day tour takes guests through museums, scenic paths, craft shows, villages, shops and all things botany. This all-ages event is ideal for kids and grandparents to enjoy scenic vistas, easy walks and friendly interactions with participating locals. Read more specific details here.
Food and Wine Classic (F.A.W.C!) Day Out in Hawke’s Bay: Nov. 2–11
Something everyone can agree on, food and wine! While this event may lean more toward older kids and adults, plan ahead for some free time on your trip and get a ticket to the Food and Wine Classic Day Out in Hawke’s Bay, enjoying local wine, fresh produce and epic vistas. Hawke’s Bay is known for outdoor adventure sports, beautiful sightseeing and downtown fun — the kids will be more than entertained shopping or on an inclusive tour of your choosing.
Shop local produce at the F.A.W.C! Market and taste oyster and Champagne pairings; tequila and tacos duos; wine tastings at Black Barn Vineyards; and live music at Crab Farm Winery during Boogie Nights — think more like easy listening and folk. The lineup of events is so impressive, you may just want to spend the week.
