While some of us think Manhattan when we hear New York, there’s a whole world beyond the city. In fact, upstate New York is nearly fall ready and utterly perfect for a seasonal family trip.
Head to the Finger Lakes region for fall foliage, quaint town shopping, dining and a wide variety of picturesque outdoor activities. Stay on a larger lake like Seneca or Cayuga for easy access to a long list of local activities or opt for a smaller lake for easier water activities for the kids. Enjoy the scenic charm, changing leaves and local outings.
Add to the itinerary: The newly renovated Syracuse Hancock International Airport will be completed in October, and includes educational exhibits delving into the aviation history of the area.
Over in the Rochester area, just a few miles from the greater Finger Lakes region, families love the history and spookier side of Highland Park, including the gravesite of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. Visit Mount Hope Cemetery on a tour or on your own while driving through the beautiful fall scene.
Add to the itinerary: Enjoy a drink or two with the older kids on a Portage Tour discovering local breweries and varied craft beer scene. While mostly known as a dry Cab Franc and Riesling wine region, the region is up and coming in terms of craft distilling and brewing. Learn about local history, art and cuisine on one of the many tours available.
Located in Schuyler County, outdoor adventurers head to Watkins Glen State Park and take the Gorge Trial. Explore three miles of water-carved gorges, dozens of waterfalls and easy to challenging hikes along Indian Trail. Dress in comfortable shoes, waterproof clothing and layers to warm up or cool off as needed.
Add to the Itinerary: Break away from the Lakes and enjoy a day or two in Ithaca. Located less than an hour away, Ithaca is a college town with a flourishing family-friendly scene for all ages. Check out local fairs and events before booking your trip. Make a night of it and stay in town, enjoying local cuisine, nightlife and a new set of hiking opportunities in the morning.
