It’s never too early to start planning your fall family travel, so put Grand County, Colorado, on your radar. Thanks to its crisp air, mountain landscape, outdoor adventures, small crowds and vibrant fall colors, Grand County is the place to be this fall.
Scenic Drives
Take a scenic ride through the beauty of color and mountain landscape Grand County has to offer. Must-do routes include Colorado River Headwaters Scenic & Historic Byway, offering stunning views of the Colorado River; Muddy & Rabbit Ears Passes, where you can drive through big-sky ranchland before driving up the Continental Divide; and Trough Road, where you can explore 24.4 miles of partially paved road with views.
Biking
If active experiences are more your family’s speed, experience the beauty of fall on two wheels. The Fraser West Trail is perfect for less-experienced riders thanks to its flat and flowing roads. The Idlewild Trail System offers singletracks, boardwalks and creek crossings with one-of-a-kind views. For beginners, St. Louis Creek Trail is a good introduction to Grand County biking.
Wildlife
A fall morning or evening in Grand County typically includes elk sightings, but travelers may also have the opportunity to see mule deer and moose while outdoors. Just remember to keep a safe distance and not to disturb the animals while viewing.
Fall Events
Theres no shortage of events in Grand County this fall. At Nunsense at Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre (Oct. 2–4), travelers are invited to the Little Sisters of Hoboken Convent’s talent show filled with music, mischiefs and jokes. Head to Granby to see the local business’s creative, festive, spooky and fun scarecrows, as well as a scarecrow contest. On Oct. 31, kids of all ages line the streets of Granby for a night of trick-or-treating, exciting costumes and more.

My children and I travel to Europe frequently. For many of our trips, we take Icelandair. Icelandair is comfortable and affordable. Additionally, they offer excellent connectivity between several cities in the United States and European hot spots. Even better, the airline offers perks for families, including discounted fares for children, activity boxes and special meals.
