Families travel by air all the time, but for parents, planning that first trip with young children can be a challenge. How will the kids react to crowds, to being restrained in a tight seating space, to long hours without physical activity or familiar surroundings? Will they be afraid of flying?
A little advance planning can prevent most potential problems. Think ahead not only about what to bring, but also how to prepare kids for the flight experience.
Here are some parent-tested tips:
Begin Talking About it Well Before the Trip
Get kids used to the idea and excited about it. Talk about where you are going and what you’ll do there. Compare riding on an airplane to rides in a play park.
Don’t Tell Them There’s No Reason to Fear Flying
Unless they seem anxious, don’t tell them there’s no reason to fear flying (and warn well-meaning relatives and friends not to put the idea in their head by telling them, “There’s nothing to be afraid of.”). Treat the upcoming trip as an exciting adventure, even if you have your own flying anxieties.
Talk It Up Ahead of the Trip
Talk it up ahead of the trip and let them help plan what to take for amusement on the plane. Explain space is limited — “cozy” is a better description than “cramped.” Let them pack their own backpack of airplane games and treats. (Leave that whole box of crayons at home and choose a few favorite colors to carry in a small bag). Plan for them to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Emphasize the Importance of Staying Together
Talk about staying together in a crowded airport, and if they are an appropriate age, consider investing in a colorful ride-on rolling cart suitcase you can pull or push.
Plan Carry-On, Mess-Free Snacks
Plan carry-on snacks and treats that aren’t messy and are easily contained. You can’t bring liquids, but you can take powdered drink mixes to add to water. Covered sippy cups are handy even for kids normally too old for them.
Don’t Forget About Airplane Entertainment Systems
Remember that airplane entertainment systems have plenty of children’s movies, or bring your own tablet loaded with favorites. Invest in real earphones instead of relying on free ones on the plane.
And cheer up … next time this will all be old-hat!
