An ever-popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure travelers, the Galápagos Islands is also becoming a trending spot for family travelers thanks to its diverse landscapes and flora and fauna across 13 main islands and more than 100 islets.
As a relatively remote destination 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, it’s perfectly natural to have some questions (or even hesitations) when considering a family trip here. Here’s some of your most burning questions answered:
When is the best time to visit?
With unique experiences available year-round, there’s really no “bad” time to go. For ideal conditions for snorkeling, swimming and enjoying pleasant weather, however, opt for a trip between December and May. Expect cooler weather and great wildlife-viewing opportunities like whale and dolphin watching between June and November.
What sort of food is eaten?
No surprise at all: Fresh seafood is the staple of Galápagos Islands cuisine, with dishes like grilled fish and ceviche very popular. There’s also a local dish called encocados, a seafood dish served in coconut sauce. Introduce the kids to El Pez Brujo, a prized local fish known for its white flesh and mild flavor. Lobster lovers will rejoice to know the Galápagos Islands have some pretty flavorful lobster dishes, particularly between September and December. Don’t forget to try locally grown coffee. Good dining spots include La Panga for seafood, Island for a relaxed setting with coffee and Los Kioskos in Puerto Ayora for casual bites.
How truly biodiverse are the Galápagos Islands?
The entire destination is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the inspiration behind Darwin’s theory of evolution. In short, the islands are a biodiversity hot spot. You’ll find loads of species endemic to the islands, such as giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas and Darwin’s finches. In fact, these birds’ variations in beak shapes played a key role in the development of the theory of natural selection.
Can you travel sustainably?
100 percent, yes. Sustainability is a top priority here, with certified tour operators, eco-lodges and strict environmental policies in place. The whole family can enjoy eco-friendly accommodations like Finch Bay Eco Hotel, wildlife-friendly tours that protect the islands’ fragile ecosystems and carbon-neutral travel options.
