Family travelers looking for something unique to do for New Year’s Eve should look to Pennsylvania. Instead of a ball drop, different towns across the state drop more unusual and quirky things. From giant foods to town mascots and more, these towns celebrate New Year’s Eve in a fun (and sometimes weird) way.
The Giant Marshmallow PEEPS Chick
In the town of Bethlehem, also known as the Christmas City, the town’s candy mascot is the star of the show. The massive, illuminated PEEPS Chick drops as crowds ring in the New Year with live music, festive lights and marshmallow magic.
The 12-Foot Pickle Drop
Dillsburg might have one of Pennsylvania’s most famous New Year’s Eve oddities. A giant, bright pickle slides down from the sky as locals and visitors cheer on the “pickle party.” Onlookers enjoy brine-themed fun, pickle-themed snacks, local dishes and more.
The 16-Foot Lebanon Bologna Drop
We know it sounds crazy but a real, 16-foot Lebanon bologna is lowered from a crane, then ceremonially sliced and shared among the group gathered in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. This smoky and savory tradition hails from the Pennsylvania Dutch, and can be considered one of the state’s strangest traditions.
The Mushroom Drop
Kennett Square owns the title of Mushroom Capital of the World and the town rings in the New Year with a glowing, 700-pound, stainless-steel mushroom floating down at midnight.
The Yuengling Beer Bottle Raise
Pottstown is the hometown of America’s oldest brewery, so toasting to Pennsylvania’s brewing heritage is a must on New Year’s Eve. Every year, a glowing Yuengling beer bottle is raised above downtown as onlookers celebrate with live music and family fun.
The Hershey’s Kiss Raise
It only makes sense to welcome another year with a giant Hershey’s Kiss at the Sweetest Place on Earth. Hershey raises a giant illuminated Hershey’s Kiss into the sky as the crowd counts down to midnight. The night also features live music and a family-friendly atmosphere.
