From vampires to Sasquatch to ghosts, Washington State is never short on the strange and unusual, and family travelers with an avid interest in all things supernatural will find more than a few otherworldly experiences. Whether your family are UFO enthusiasts or ghost hunters, here’s where to go:
Mount Rainier Mysteries
Washington State ranks second for the most UFO sightings in the country, and Mount Rainier is a hot spot for these strange encounters. A great place to also hike or camp, look to the skies for strange lights or flying saucers.
Bigfoot in the Big Park
The elusive Bigfoot is reported to roam the dense forests of North Cascades National Park. Hike through trails of alpine peaks and keep an eye out for this legendary creature.
Forks and Fangs
Fan of the Twilight series? Forks, forever famous for the vampires of the hit book and film series, features werewolf beware signs and vampire-themed shops along the streets.
Swim if You Dare in Lake Chelan
A beast is said to circle the depths of the state’s deepest lake. The Lake Chelan dragon dates back to Native American folklore, with evidence of a sea serpent reported as recently as 1997.
Sleepless in Seattle
Tour Seattle Underground, a passageway of basements and alleys that sank under the ground after the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. And be sure to stop by spooky sites like Merchant’s Café & Saloon and Hotel Sorrento, where ghost sightings were reported.
Battle Ghosts in Walla Walla
This town is the site of the Whitman Massacre, a mid-19th-century killing of American missionaries by a small group of Cayuse men who accused one of the missionaries of poisoning 200 Cayuse in his medical care during an outbreak of measles. Many visitors to the site report hearing the sound of hooves from the battle.
