Philadelphia’s rich history and culture lays the groundwork for an educational, fun and active trip for the family during Black History Month. Visit museums, workshops and heritage celebrations in the diverse City of Brotherly Love — the African American Museum is a good, albeit obvious, place to start.

Celebrate Black History Month during the debut of “Black Pulp!” at the African American Museum. Available Feb. 2–April 29, the exhibit showcases printed works from graphic designs and comic books to the written word — exploring the Black identity in society, 1912–2016, through art.

In February, the National Constitution Center celebrates Black History Month with workshops, self-guided tours dedicated to African American history and a slew family-friendly activities. Enjoy “Breaking Barriers,” a show delving into the lives of Black history icons from Bessie Coleman and Thurgood Marshall to Jackie Robinson and other pioneers in African American history.

Save time for something a bit more upbeat and head to the hip-hop musical, Henry Box Brown. Running Feb. 1–17 at the Community College of Philadelphia, Henry Box Brown: The Musical tells the story of Henry Box Brown, a slave who mailed himself from Virginia to Philadelphia. Advance tickets available for $30–50.

Enjoy a free show at the Temple Performing Arts Center, Feb. 6, in Northern Philadelphia. University students present “Drumming Traditions of Brazil, West Africa and India” — no reservation necessary.

Make a special stop for the kids at the Independence National Mall and listen to African American legends from Harriet Tubman to Ned Hector tell their stories over the course of the month. Check out the site for more information and when exactly to bring the kids for their favorite historical figure.

Stroll through the city with the family popping in any of the many museums, public libraries and shops for a fun and impromptu weekend in the city. With so much going on all month long, it will be easy to have an educational and fun time with the kids, teens and even adult children as the city has a bustling restaurant scene and nightlife.
