Head to Charlottesville, Virginia, for Culture and Mac and Cheese

Virginia is a state full of history and culture, making it a great place for family travel. You can show the kids a beautiful state with plenty of adventure and, while you’re at it, discover the birthplace of the American version of the ultimate kid-favorite comfort food: macaroni and cheese.

Pasta with cheese dishes actually date back to the Middle Ages, but what most Americans grew up with was created by an enslaved chef in Virginia, James Heming. Heming worked for President Thomas Jefferson, who took his chef to Paris for formal training. It was there Heming learned the craft of this dish, and brought it back to Jefferson’s home, Monticello — and the rest is history.

Today, families can visit Monticello, Jefferson’s historic home (and one of the most famous presidential homes in the country), and tour the grounds where mac and cheese found its American foothold. You can also introduce the family to plenty of other amazing dishes while  there since the city has a thriving food scene showcasing local talent, locally sourced products and plenty of Southern recipes — including plenty of mac and cheese!

Some of the city’s restaurants have historic roots that go far beyond the dishes they serve. Michie Tavern was established in 1784 when it served hot meals and warm beds for travelers. Located just half a mile from Monticello, visit this restaurant for lunch and then enjoy some retail therapy at the shops housed in the historic buildings on the property.
