Destinations / North America

Many family travelers are probably itching to get outdoors and enjoy some warmer weather, so why not head to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast to explore Fort Macon State Park? Visiting a state park can tell you a lot about the destination, and Fort Macon State Park is one of the most popular in North Carolina. The park offers an inside look at the destination’s history, nature and beauty.

Fort Macon was once a Civil War fort for both Union and Confederate forces at different times, but, after the war, the fort eventually fell into disrepair. In 1924, Fort Macon was sold to North Carolina for a whopping $1 and was restored and introduced into the state park system in 1934. In the 1980s, the fort received a multimillion-dollar renovation to restore the 26 casemates once used as shelter, kitchen spaces and prison cells for soldiers.

Now, visitors can wander through the fort to learn more about the rich history of the park and of North Carolina itself. Today, Fort Macon also features a protected beach; a seaside bathhouse; Elliott Coues Trail, a moderate hike through maritime forest and marsh; family-friendly picnic areas; and fishing areas with a variety of fish.

The park is free to visit and open year-round. In addition to the fort and surrounding features, Fort Macon also hosts a variety of activities like daily guided tours, Small Arms Demonstration, astronomy nights and bird hikes.

This Hotel is the Perfect Base for Families in Tokyo

For years, whenever I asked my children where they wanted to go next, the answer was always the same. “Take us to Japan,” they said. When we finally made it, I put a lot of thought into where to stay.

Best of Both Worlds

Enjoy the best of both worlds when you fly with TAP Air Portugal thanks to the Portugal Stopover program. With the program, TAP passengers, whether traveling for business, leisure or both, can stop in Portugal for up to 10 days at no additional airfare on the way to their final destination. What does this mean for travelers wishing to explore by both land and sea? It means after flying to Portugal with TAP and experiencing the country in an entirely new way, travelers can then embark on scenic river and ocean cruises from  Portugal’s port cities, or fly with TAP to another European destination.

Icelandair’s Long Weekend Getaways Are a Great Way to Explore

Icelandair is well-known for its stopover program, which allows passengers to stay in Iceland for a few days at no extra charge. It’s a great way for families to see a new place and explore a new country on their way to and from Europe. When my family travels, we enjoy spending a couple days exploring Reykjavik and Iceland’s natural beauty as part of our trip. Iceland has become one of my family’s favorite destinations. We always find something new to do, no matter how many times we visit.
