It seems like new terminology pops up all the time when it comes to travel and how we do it. Some of these terms are hits and some are definitely misses, but the idea of a San Francisco “baycation” is one we can get on board with.
A “baycation” is a way to experience one of San Francisco’s best spots to relax, explore and play — the Presidio. It’s the perfect way to experience San Francisco without having to deal with crowds. Sure, you could visit Fisherman’s Wharf and sit in traffic trying to navigate your way down Lombard Street (and, honestly, you should probably still try to visit these iconic attractions if it’s your first time in the city), or you could head to the Presidio to slow down and enjoy a green getaway from the city’s metropolitan vibe.
The Presidio has everything from epic views of the Golden Gate Bridge to hiking trails through the native landscape, all centered around beautiful San Francisco Bay. Depending on the day and time, you can find live entertainment, but any time you visit you’ll find plenty of open space and fresh air. The Field Station is a discovery center that is free and perfect for kids and adults alike to get a hands-on look at the Presidio’s nature and history through ever-changing experiences and exhibits. (The Field Station is open Wednesday–Sunday.)
There are five distinct beaches where you can lounge on a warm (or, at least, fog-free) day. Kids will love Outpost, the largest playground in the city where everything is made from nature to reflect the native landscape, and the whole family can learn about local marine life at Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center, where you can look at plankton through a microscope and check out live marine creatures in on-site aquariums.
You can spend a whole day (or several) exploring the Presidio thanks to the variety of activities and the range of food options — you’ll find everything from full-service restaurants to food trucks, but if you are looking for the full park experience, there are also plenty of picnic spots. And if you want to spend your entire San Francisco stay directly on the bay in the Presidio, you’ll find two separate accommodations (Inn at the Presidio and Lodge at the Presidio), along with Rob Hill Campground.
