Introducing Children to Skiing

Snow sports are a great way to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors during a time when there is little other reason to do so. Bitter cold and leafless trees do a good job of pushing people away, but winter is also the only time to go skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports.

Skiing has many facets and is enjoyed by many, but introducing children to the sport is probably easier than you think.

Most major ski destinations offer skiing lessons for participants of all skill levels and ages, and children are not excluded in this. Camel Back Mountain, located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, is just one resort that offers these lessons. The resort offers half-day programs to get kids prepared for their future snow sport endeavors. It is important for parents to make sure their children are prepared for their lessons, and Camel Back Mountain suggests making sure the children have a full breakfast and arrive dressed in layers. Helmets are recommended for the practice.

Like most other sports and hobbies, skiing should be introduced to kids in a non-threatening and fun way. Don’t start your child off on an intimidating slope. Allowing kids to get the hang of the equipment on flat and mild inclines can build confidence and proper form before kids are subjected to tough slopes.

Once your kids are versed in the basics of the sport, they might be ready for private lessons to continue improving. Sending kids for private lessons is a good way to make sure they get thorough and expert instruction, but can get costly. If you, as a parent, are able to let go a little and are a well-versed skier, you can train your kids personally.

An important lesson, and one that applies to skills and activities all throughout kids’ lives, is parents should be careful not to push or be forceful in a desire to teach skills. Depending on the location, young children can begin getting used to skiing equipment as early as they can maintain balance on two legs. Even if a child enjoys skiing as an extremely young person, when they grow, their opinions can change, and they shouldn’t be forced to continue the sport.

Skiing provides a great excuse to get out of the house, but before thrusting children into the hobby headfirst, they need to be well-equipped and prepared.
