With fall and winter right around the corner, plan a family trip to the Gulf of California, where the seasons are kinder than they are in the rest of the United States. Located off the coast of Loreto in Baja California Sur, the Islands of Loreto feature five UNESCO World Heritage sites in 800-square-mile Loreto National Marine Park waiting to be explored.

Loreto National Marine Park is home to more than 80 percent of the marine life in the Pacific Ocean. One of the best ways to explore the aquatic wonder is by quietly and slowly paddling through the turquoise waters. During your time on the water, look for blue whales, humpback whales, dolphins, flying fish, manta rays, turtles, blue-footed boobies and more.
Many local tour operators offer a variety of kayaking excursions from beginner to advanced, all guided by experts. If you are looking for multiday adventures, kayakers can embark on trips offered by Sea Kayak Baja Mexico and Sea Kayak Adventures. Each excursion features evenings spent camping under the stars on island beaches and exploring the island landscapes during the day. Travelers can also snorkel, fish, paddle board and more.

Although kayaking is a year-round activity, it is best to go October through May, when you can see the whales migrating, temperatures are cooler and the water is warm.
