It’s always time for music in Louisiana’s Cajun Country and, in May, the place to be for family travelers is St. Landry’s Parish. Celebrate Mothers’ Day in Opelousas at Tucka James Music Fest, May 10–11, where 16 artists perform over two days. Friday is Country Takeover and Saturday stars the King of Swing, Tucka James.
You’ll find lively Cajun music somewhere every weekend, with jams featuring professional musicians and others that welcome those at every level. Anyone is welcome to come and enjoy the show. Every Saturday morning, experienced Cajun music fiddlers and accordionists gather at Savoy Music Jam to share music and stories in a 40-year-old tradition that’s been featured in National Geographic and Smithsonian Magazine. You’re welcome to take a chair and tap your feet or dance to the irresistible beat.
On the first Sunday of every month, JAMbalaya Acoustic Music Jam begins at 12:30 p.m. at Tom’s Fiddle & Bow in Arnaudville, welcoming experienced and beginner musicians.
Every second Saturday, Zydeco Capital Jam begins at 1 p.m. at St. Landry Parish Visitor Center in Opelousas, and every third Saturday at 1 p.m., Jammin’ on the Bayou is hosted by musician Stanley Lee at the center in Opelousas. Musicians of any level are invited to bring an instrument and play along, and the public is invited to sit and enjoy the music at this free event — or to join in the dancing. While all ages are welcome at jams, this kid-friendly event is especially popular with families.
If you don’t know how to dance or want to brush up your skills, take Zydeco Dance Lessons every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas. Free lessons are led by a dance group, and once you’ve taken one, you’ll be ready to join the locals at a jam or one of the Opelousas dance clubs.
Cajun Country is known for its food, as well as its music, and if you want to know where to find king cake or gumbo, stop in at St. Landry Parish Visitor Center or consult the website for suggestions.
