Laredo, Texas, offers family travelers a brand-new festival for Earth Day this year. Held on Earth Day (April 22), The Border is Beautiful Festival celebrates bicultural art, music and heritage.
The event focuses on the Rio Grande River in south Texas, with a message of unity between the sister cities of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to create a deeper cultural awareness.
“The Border is Beautiful Street Festival is to celebrate, to celebrate our people, our culture and have a good time,” said Gabriela Treviño, board member, Laredo Film Society. “It’s also a teachable moment. We are resisting other labels that have been put on us and using this as a moment to reflect on the significance of our natural border – the Rio Grande. We see it as part of our everyday lives, but the festival really invites us to pause and realize its power and importance.”

The festival includes a live art installation, street performers from Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, a market, food and drinks and a musical performance by Grammy award-winning Grupo Fantasma.
“What better way to celebrate Earth Day and its 2023 theme ‘Invest in Our Planet’ than with a street festival on the South Texas border, in celebration of our river and all the biodiversity that it sustains. We are blessed,” said Tricia Cortez, executive director, Rio Grande International Study Center.
The family-friendly festival takes place April 22, 5–10 p.m. Early bird tickets are available for $10. General admission costs $15 at the door. Admission is complimentary for children ages 12 and younger.
