The Saarland, the beautiful Southwestern German state along the French and Luxembourg border, is a nature lover’s paradise and was where I found endless opportunities to get outside, and enjoy fresh air and the region’s intimate connection with nature. From the fact you can drink out of the Saar River as it runs through the capital city of Saarbrücken thanks to the region’s dedication to protecting and preserving the natural landscape to the expert use of locally grown organic ingredients by the region’s chefs, Saarland is the perfect place for family travelers to enjoy nature while experiencing one of Germany’s lesser-traveled places.

The state is home to a UNESCO biosphere reserve with endless opportunities to hike and cycle through the rolling hills and sprawling meadows. You can also head to the town of Saarlouis, where the remains of ramparts surrounding this fortified city are now covered in grass. Outside of the fortifications, you can take a stroll along the river to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Not far from Saarlouis, take an invigorating hike or bike ride to get an up-close look at Saar Polygon, a towering, 32-meter monument built at the top of a slag hill (made from the byproduct of the smelting process and transformed into a landscape feature by Mother Nature) to commemorate the end of the region’s coal mining history.

The pinnacle outdoor experience in the Saarland is a visit to the Treetop Path at the Saarschliefe, where the Saar River makes a sharp loop through the densely wooded landscape of the region. Visitors can take a walk through a wooden boardwalk that winds through the treetops, marked by fun puzzles, informative signs and activity stations along the way until you reach the lookout tower. The tower itself winds upward at a gradual slant that is easily manageable for all skill levels until you reach the top, which stands at 42 kilometers above the ground. From there, you can enjoy the expansive view of the river and forest beyond, the most iconic and symbolic view of the Saarland. On the return walk to the parking lot, you can stop and shop in the gift store, grab a snack or give kids time to play in the playground among the trees.
