Travel Tips

There is no one type of dad or one perfect trip to please every dad. Each dad is special and unique, but you know the dads in your family best and you know what he or they love most. Besides you, of course. Here are some trips to consider as gifts for Father’s Day based on different interests of many dads.

Music Dad

The dad that likes to rock out or sway to the crooning melodies of soulful singers will appreciate a visit to New Orleans where the musicians performing for free on sidewalks are often more talented than those found in clubs around the world. Stay steps away from the French Quarter at NOPSI Hotel, where old world jazz meets a crisp, edgy scene, perfect for Modern Music Dad. Shake it out to nightly musical events around the hotel, including the rooftop pool that gives dad a glorious view of the crooning city. Here, all kinds of families are welcome, including dad’s four-legged best friend. If he’s more of an Old-Fashioned Music Dad, he’ll love the Soniat House part of the exclusive Small Luxury Hotel of the World collection and although it’s set right in the French Quarter, it still retains a quiet atmosphere. The hotel is a trio of restored 19th-century townhomes decorated the way it would have been when it was first constructed. Sidewalk jazz musicians share parts of their soul just down the serene, tree-lined street. Country Music Dad will love the wailing sounds of Nashville and one option for dads more laid-back but who also want to visit the Grand Ole Opry is to stay at the Nashville KOA Resort, where there is a balance of stars and campfires to the blazing lights and strumming fingers of Music City USA.

Spiritual Dad

If dad prefers contemplating and lighting candles, a few days in Bhutan at the Gangtey Lodge will surely clear his mind. He can meditate in a Buddhist learning center and take part in a cleansing ceremony that will rid him of any pesky demons following him around. Also available for Spiritual Dad who likes hiking and culture is the Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel. Just on the outskirts of Aguas Calientes, dad can take a guided mystical tour around Machu Picchu that is led by a shaman. Later, you can use the opportunity of being surrounded by all these holy men to recommit your love for your kid’s dad by participating in an Andean wedding ritual! If dad is more of a Domestic Spiritual Dad, then a trip to Sedona would be ideal. Explore the multitude of vortexes in the region from the comfort of the award-winning Adobe Grand Villas Boutique Bed and Breakfast Resort, a collection of luxury rooms each decorated in unique, whimsical tribute to the Southwest region. Stays include five-course, gourmet breakfasts prepared by Executive Chef Michael Merilli to fuel your inner and outer explorations as well as afternoon hors d’oeuvres to welcome you back from your discoveries.

Wine Connoisseur Dad

A visit to an up-and-coming wine region is the perfect place to find that perfect blend and at a reasonable price. Wine Connoisseur Dad would enjoy the South Coast Winery Resort and Spa, which drapes itself around the hills in Temecula, California. Outside your villa, a private vineyard plunges into canyons that open to wide vistas of verdant farms. Don’t miss the charcuterie platter at the resort restaurant, The Vineyard Rose. It’s one of the best dad will ever have as he sips the resort’s European-inspired vintages. If Wine Connoisseur Dad also likes a bit of historical whimsy, then the Barboursville Vineyards in Charlottesville, Virginia, are his best bet. With more than 300 wineries to explore, Historical Wine Connoisseur Dad will love unwinding in one of the 17th-, 18th– or 19th-century cottages.

Sports Fan Dads

Many dads could be described as Sports Fan Dads but not many dads could realize their sports dreams by participating in a fantasy football or baseball league where they’re coached by and play against professional players! The Football Sports Fan Dad might throw spirals with former greats like Joe Theismann, Jerome Bettis and Tim Brown at Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp. If your dad is more of a Baseball Sports Fan Dad, then he’ll love the Chicago Cubs Fantasy Baseball Camp where he’ll get to suit up with and be coached by the greats as he trades fly-balls and sliders against other league’s fantasy baseball camps. But if your dad’s days of running around bases are behind him, then he can get a behind-the-scenes tour of popular stadiums with Jay Buckley’s Baseball Tours. He’ll also get VIP access to games and players. However, if your dad is more of a Golf Sports Dad, then he’ll love the Father’s Day package at TPC golf courses, ranked as professional courses with some hosting PGA tournaments.

Adventure Dad

If dad has a streak of the extreme in him, then he’d love to visit the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya where Club Woodward stakes its claim on bone-crushing fun. Extreme Sports Adventure Dad can get his X-Games on in a controlled setting with foam cubes cushioning his fall as he attempts 20-story downhill ski jumps and skateboards around pool-sized caverns. If dad is also a fan of American Ninja Warrior, he can try his luck in the Wrecktangle, a course filled with swinging and plunging obstacles. Challenge dad to see who can get through the course faster.

If he’s more of a Mellow Extreme Sports Adventure Dad, then he can visit Bend, Oregon, where there is another Wrecktangle in town, but it’s also one of the top-10 fly-fishing spots in the world. Find the perfect area to fill your bucket along the 252-mile Deschutes River or go whitewater rafting with Sun Country Tours. He can call it a day at the luxury Oxford Hotel. Summer season opens Father’s Day weekend at Mt. Bachelor, so he can race bikes down mountain trails or take epic hikes. If your Adventure Dad has a bit of cowboy in him, he can ride the range on horseback at Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo and later practice his hunting skills on skeet shooting and archery ranges. Just to keep things interesting, he can practice his bull-wrangling skills on a mechanical bull. If he survives his ride, he can take the family to the weekly Saturday night rodeo to watch the real cowboys ride. Fishing is found here too and a swamp buggy tour is available from the marina for pioneers who want to explore the muddier parts of the region. Dad can also hop onto an airboat to learn about life around the Kissimmee River.

If dad is the type that enjoys his thrills on sand dunes, then the Grand Velas Los Cabos will keep him flying as he grips the hills on his ATV and soars high above them. Once he’s flying, he won’t have to stop if he climbs aboard a hang glider to take the tour that will cruise him around the skies of Cabo San Lucas. To complete the flight experience, he can strap a rocket to his feet and take off from the turquoise water that propels him over sea life on his FlyBoard.

No matter the experience you choose for dad, it’ll feel like you customized his trip and he’ll love that you know him so well.
