Whether you are a lover of romantic trips, a train or rail enthusiast or have little ones eager for their next adventure, get ready to hear, see, smell and feel the majesty of Iron Horse on the Grand Canyon Railway. Originally home to more than 30,000 steam engine trains, the United States has only 200 steam engine trains today. Out of the 200, just a few still run and offer rides for passenger — most on museum lines.
Back then, the steam engine marked an aspect of the Industrial Revolution, connecting the U.S. East Coast to the West Coast. In 1901, the railroad reached the Grand Canyon South Rim, providing access to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of The World.

This year, Grand Canyon Railway announced the steam engine train’s return. Constructed in 1923, the Green Machine, weighs 310 tons and is powered by waste vegetable oil and snowmelt.
This year, the Steam is scheduled to debut at 9:30 a.m. on the first Saturday in March through October. Additional dates include Presidents’ Day (Feb. 21), Earth Day (April 22) and the anniversary of Grand Canyon Railway (Sept. 17).
