With National Geographic’s SharkFest now airing on Disney+ and Discovery Channel’s Shark Week soon to debut July 24, family travelers wanting to see sharks up close and learn about the fascinating species should consider a visit to Corpus Christi, Texas. Its location on the Gulf of Mexico means the region sees many shark species inhabiting the waters. Further inland, visitors can take part in a number of shark-related activities.

Book a fishing charter and try to reel in one of the shark species found in the area, including tiger, hammerhead, bull, nurse, bonnethead and blacktip sharks. Through September, ideal conditions make for the perfect deep-sea fishing experience.

Head to Texas State Aquarium and walk through the Saving Sharks exhibit to learn about the many misconceptions about sharks. Guests also discover some of the ways sharks maintain a healthy ecosystem. At the aquarium, visitors even have the chance to touch live sharks in a touch pool, as well as see a life-sized great white shark replica, step inside a full-sized diving cave and take a photo inside the jaws of a prehistoric Megalodon.

The aquarium offers the more daring to take part in its Snorkel with a Shark Exclusive Encounters program. Here, guests can not only snorkel with sharks but also swim among stingrays, barracudas and eels.
