Travel Tips

The Sofitel New York, with its 398 guestrooms, 52 suites (four of which feature spacious terraces) and prime location, makes a perfect fit for the theater-loving family.

Just steps from Times Square, the luxury shopping on Fifth Avenue and a plethora of theaters and shows, the hotel is a quiet respite from the hubbub of the streets. Step into the modern-luxe lobby with its soaring ceilings and intimate seating. The lobby is created with the feel of a boutique European property in mind and it reflects this nicely, both in décor choices and arrangements. The space frequently displays exhibits with ties to the hotel and its location. During my stay, one could find a beautiful array of one-of-a-kind Broadway posters created by legendary artist Frank ‘Fraver’ Verlizzo. In the coming months, guests can expect a new exhibit to take its place, with a focus on iconic covers of the magazine France-Amérique (a nod to the brand’s French heritage; plus, one of the food and beverage staff at the hotel is a regular contributor).

After checking in at the desk tucked away to the left end of the lobby, guests can take the busy elevators up to their floor. Regardless of your floor, the new-build property features beautiful views in just about every room, including panoramas featuring the Empire State Building.

The terrace suites on the 24th floor are particularly well suited for families, providing plenty of space and luxury. The Tony Suite, created in celebration of the 2018 Tony Awards, is especially a treat for either the entire family or a multigenerational girls’ trip if a Broadway show is also on your itinerary.

The suite opens into an ample living room, walls covered in Tony memorabilia, from historic dinner menus to seating arrangements, photos to invitations. On one side of the room is a vanity mirror with lighting similar to what you might find in a backstage dressing room. On the other is a bookcase filled with tomes on the history of Broadway, as well as several Broadway-themed board games for the theater-curious kids in your group. The coffee table was created from a piece of Tony signage as well and made purely for the suite.

The bedroom continues the Tony’s theme, with more memorabilia hanging on the walls and over the bed. For practical purposes, further on in the suite, you’ll find lots of storage for luggage and clothes, as well as a large bathroom. The suite’s curved terrace provides plenty of red-striped seating and views of the skyline, as well as the streets below.

The Tony Suite is only available for a limited time, but if you can’t make it to see the suite, you can still enjoy one of the Sofitel New York’s many gorgeous guestrooms. The classic, superior and luxury guestrooms provide similar amounts of space, and a family can easily fit a roll-away bed or portable crib without sacrificing too much room. The bedrooms include a seating area and desk. There’s lots of storage and closet space, including floor-to-ceiling mirrors in multiple spots for dressing. The marble-covered bathrooms offer a separate soaking tub, great for the kids (or the tired mom!), as well as a rain shower.

For further planning of your family’s Broadway getaway, you might also consider a trip to the New York Sofitel during the hotel’s Wine Days event, which occurs late September through late October. Perfect for the family girls’ trip or a couples-only stay, you’ll enjoy unique wine-themed events, such as inventive pairings.
