Things to Do in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a Winter Trip

Destinations / North America

If you’re looking for a winter getaway to enjoy a little bit of snow and a little bit of sunshine, Santa Fe might just be your family’s perfect option. The city’s culture, cuisine and laid-back vibe are attractive any time of year, but during the winter, it’s especially lovely.

For a dry, arid region of the country, you might be surprised to learn Santa Fe gets snow during the winter. But it does, indeed, have the possibility of getting snow between November and March, yet still enjoys average daytime temperatures in the low 50s, so you can skip the deep winter chill of other wintertime destinations.

There are plenty of ways to entertain the whole family, from the first location of the mind-bending attraction Meow Wolf to LiggetVille Adventure Center with rope courses, zip rails and climbing walls for all ages.

The city is known for its vibrant art scene rooted in its cultural heritage, so it’s a great place to schedule some art classes for the family while you’re there, like a pottery class or painting workshop at one of the many studios or galleries in the city.

If your family enjoys outdoor adventures, there is plenty to be had, even in the wintertime. You can explore the landscape on a horseback ride or a nature trail, or you can teach the kids a bit about the Indigenous history of the area at Bandelier National Monument. The ancient petroglyphs and rock cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo people date back to 1150 A.D. and are a great place to spend a day letting your kids learn by exploring living history.

When you aren’t busy adventuring, downtown Santa Fe is a hotbed of great shopping and dining experiences so you can fill hungry bellies and bring home some great souvenirs.
