Travel Tips

For those with a pool in their backyard, summer means spending the day hanging out, swimming and having fun with friends — don’t let the beloved season roll by without having an epic pool party to celebrate. As we begin to reopen around the country, remind to plan any summer parties with the guidelines of your state in mind.

Check out these tips for a pool party your guests will never forget.

The first step to any epic party is choosing a theme. Classic summer motifs like Hawai’ian luau, American flag everything and beach bash are always a hit, but don’t be afraid to get creative. When it comes to decorations you can either buy them or get crafty.

Make sure you have plenty of floats, noodles and pool toys for the kids to play with. Stock up on some basic floats from the Dollar Store, then add some pizazz with a unicorn or swan float for the kids to take turns on — they also make for great photo ops.

You can’t have an epic pool party without delicious food and treats to munch on, like hot dogs and burgers on the grill. An easy, tasty and popular summer treat is dirt pudding, you can pre-make it so it’s ready to enjoy, or let the kids be creative and make it themselves. With all the food and fun, guests are bound to get thirsty, so fill a cooler or tub with a variety of drinks to cool off with.

Have plenty of games and activities planned for both in and out of the pool, so the kids never get bored. Some ideas for outside games are cornhole, KanJam, relay races and obstacle courses. Set up a photo booth with props so guests can take home a memento so they can remember the party. For the pool games, think sharks and minnows, pool races, jumping competitions and Marco Polo, among many others.

The best way to end the epic pool party is a movie and popcorn. Consider buying or renting a projector to watch a movie against the house, the kids will love it.
