Travel Tips

Most people think the best time to visit the beach is in the summertime when temperatures are high, water is cool and the sun lasts well into the evening hours. Savvy travelers, however, know a beach destination can be fun for the whole family year-round.

This winter head to the sandy shores of San Diego to explore the area’s tide pools. Spending a day in these unique ecosystems is not only easy on the budget but also a great way to get the kids outdoors for a fun and educational experience.

From November until March, the local tide pools are the finest. Tides are low during the daytime hours, exposing delicate marine life that calls the rocks and reefs home. Hermit crabs, sea anemones and starfish are just a few of the creatures that can be easily observed by exploring the intertidal zone when the waters recede from the shore.

Kids can not only see the incredible plant and animal life up close and personal, but can learn about how important it is to respect and preserve these fascinating natural habitats. Fish, mussels, lobsters and octopus are all part of the local ecosystem you can encounter as you wander among the rocks. There are even California sea hares, a sea slug like nothing you will ever encounter in your garden.

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla is a great option for families looking for a trained expert to show them the tidepooling ropes. Trained naturalists from the aquarium lead visitors on walks through the local tide pools located on the beach below the aquarium, giving invaluable information about how the intertidal system works and how the inhabitants survive in their fragile homes. Tours start mid-February and run 12–4 p.m. in the afternoon several days a week. Advanced reservations are required.

Cabrillo National Monument is not only historically significant — it’s where Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first discovered San Diego Bay— but it’s also a fun way to enjoy the local tide pools, not to mention the beautiful local scenery. Just take the park’s coastal trail down to the shore where you will find numerous pools to explore.

No matter which beach you choose for your tidepooling adventures, make sure you come prepared with comfortable shoes that have good grip. The flat rocks exposed as the tide rolls out are often slick and slippery, so no flip flops. And don’t forget to stick around the beach at the end of your adventure for one of those incredible California sunsets to round out your wintertime trip to the beach.
