Listicles

Think of Belgian cuisine and you’ll likely head straight for one of two sweet treats — waffles and chocolate. Both can be found extensively throughout the city, but here are the top spots for the latter.

Mary

Founded by Mary Delluc, who, by the way, just so happened to be a preferred chocolatier of the royal family, this shop is nearby the royal palace and has been in business for about a century.

Concept Chocolate

If you intend to pair your chocolate with another Belgian treat — not waffles, but beer — sign up for a double chocolate and beer tasting at Concept Chocolate. The other workshops and tastings are plentiful and include options like wine and chocolate pairings and team building activities.

But why limit yourself to just a few spots around the city? See the favorites and nothing but the best with a Brussels chocolate tour led by locals who know the city’s culinary scene. Tours are available every single day in the afternoon.

Godiva

Your typical mall kiosk Godiva, this is not. The first Godiva workshop opened in 1926 in Brussels, selling pralines, but the pièce de résistance of the brand debuted in 1946 — the Truffle Originale, dark chocolate mousse encased in more dark chocolate, rolled in pure cocoa powder. Visit the factory outlet or one of several shops around the city.

Choco-Story Brussels

Why not stop at an entire museum dedicated to the art of chocolate? Choco-Story Brussels receives tens of thousands of visitors each year to see the historic exhibits and demonstrations, as well as partake in tastings and workshops. You can grab a print guide and lead yourself around the small museum, or enjoy an expert-guided tour.

Neuhaus

Found in 1857, the original Neuhaus is right in Grand Place and rumored to be the inventor of the praline. Can’t make it to Belgium any time soon? This luxury chocolatier expanded around the globe and also ships internationally.

Pierre Marcolini

A “haute chocolaterie,” Pierre Marcolini serves beautifully arranged boxes of chocolates alongside equally delectable macarons, eclairs, cakes and other confectionaries. Each beautiful creation is served up with plenty of flair and panache, suiting the brand’s luxury status.

6 Stroller-Friendly Cities in Europe

Families traveling with young children learn to be creative in getting strollers into seemingly impossible places. Some cities confound even the most determined parents: Innumerable bridges with steps are a challenge in Venice, and Lisbon’s hills seem insurmountable. Narrow or rough stone-paved streets are not stroller-friendly, either. Save those cities for another year and consider these instead.
