Motel 6 recently conducted its fifth annual holiday survey in partnership with OnePoll to find out Americans’ travel plans. After polling more than 2,000 Americans with travel plans this winter, the company discovered several important statistics, something family travelers should keep in mind when formulating their next winter trip.
One of the main findings of the survey found nearly three in five travelers (57 percent) plan to “trip stack” this winter. This occurs when travelers add another destination or trip to existing travel plans. Additionally, the survey noted those planning to trip stack (67 percent) choose to do so because the holidays are the only time everyone is available to travel.
Of those planning to trip stack this winter, added plans include taking time to relax (55 percent), going somewhere they’ve never been before (54 percent), visiting family (52 percent) and meeting with friends (40 percent).

Seventy-two percent of respondents hope to see snow during the holidays, while 71 percent of respondents claim they’re more likely to try a new activity while on a winter vacation over a summer vacation. Of those surveyed, 47 percent expect to feel joyful and 41 percent anticipate feeling peaceful while on winter vacation this year.
Of the 2,000 respondents, 33 percent admit they’ve never partaken in snowman building, while 30 percent never engaged in a snowball fight. The survey also revealed 24 percent never drank hot chocolate.
More than half of respondents (52 percent) plan to cross an average of three state lines, with 46 percent planning to stay at a hotel or motel during their winter trips.
