Any cruise is a treat, and with more than two dozen river cruise lines to choose from and twice as many sailing the oceans, you can find one to suit everyone on your family travels. Smaller than ocean-going mega-ships, river cruises are well-suited to couples, many of them traveling the great rivers of Europe and the United States.
Several lines cruise the Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Seine and Elbe in Europe, as well as the Nile and Amazon. But Uniworld River Cruises stretches those boundaries, taking passengers to rivers and regions they might not have considered, or even heard of. For out-of-the-ordinary adventures with all the luxuries you expect on a cruise, consider these destinations.
The Maranon and Ucayali Rivers in Peru
Deep in the rainforests of Peru, the Maranon and Ucayali Rivers unite to become the Amazon. Explore all three and take side trips by skiff on the tributary Samiria and Yanayacu-Pucate rivers, where you can kayak, canoe or swim. Visit remote villages and take jungle walks with a naturalist guide to learn about local plants and animals. Spend evenings stargazing into a dark sky with no city lights to obscure the stars.
The Mekong River
The Mekong is the lifeblood of Southeast Asia, flowing through Cambodia and southern Vietnam. You’ll explore its backwaters and narrow canals by traditional sampan to visit floating villages and colorful markets and meet local craftspeople. Side trips travel to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, and colorful Siem Reap for a visit to the UNESCO-listed temple complex of Angkor Wat.
The Ganges
Considered sacred, the Ganges flows through the heart of India, through ancient cities, tiny villages and beautiful scenery. Between visits to the Rajbari temple complex and Kalna’s magnificent Hindu temples built by the maharajas of Bardhaman, you’ll explore colorful flower markets and authentic artisan villages, as well as meet traditional artisans. Before boarding the cruise, you’ll spend time in India’s famed golden Triangle to visit the Taj Mahal and two other magnificent monuments in Delhi and Jaipur.
