If you’re headed to Canada this winter and planning a stay in the Manitoba province, you will definitely want to include a visit to Winnipeg on your family travel itinerary. While you may be planning on a snowy winter wonderland (and rightfully so, Manitoba is lovingly referred to as Manisnowba by some humorous locals), thanks to an attraction that has only been open for just more than a year, you can also enjoy a day in the beautiful outdoors filled with warmth and beautiful flowers rather than a chilly snowscape.
The Leaf, an indoor horticulture attraction at Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park, features four distinct biomes designed to showcase the diversity of our planet through the plants inhabiting it. The different biomes you can explore include the Hartley and Heather Richardson Tropical Biome, the Shirley Richardson Butterfly Garden, the Babs Asper Display House and the Mediterranean Biome. While each biome has its own unique draw, perhaps the most impressive display (and a pretty great reason to put the Leaf on your itinerary) is the pièce de résistance, the largest indoor waterfall in Canada.
Located in the Tropical Biome, this waterfall stands about 60 feet tall and helps with the indoor ecosystem of the Leaf by creating necessary warmth through humidification during the winter months and keeping temperatures nice and cool in the summer months. The waterfall was designed by Canadian artist and landscape architect Dan Euser and provides visitors with a beautiful backdrop during their visit.
While the Mediterranean and tropical biomes, along with the butterfly garden, remain constant, the Babs Asper Display House changes several times per year in order to feature seasonal flowers and global themes, all designed to showcase natural beauty, color and diversity. Currently, the theme is Celebration!, which focuses on the holiday season by displaying plants, decorations and traditions found throughout the world at this time of year.
While the Leaf is open year-round, it does close early on New Year’s Eve and experiences occasional closures due to display changes within the biomes. You can purchase tickets, which are time and date specific, at the door, or get a slightly discounted rate by purchasing online ahead of time.
