For those interested in Civil War and maritime history, consider a stop at The Hunley during your next round of family travel. The H.L. Hunley, or The Hunley, was the first submarine to sink an enemy warship.

In 1864, the Confederate submarine and its eight-man crew sunk the USS Housatonic. The submarine and its crew disappeared before returning home. Many theories exist as to The Hunley’s fate, from a torpedo attack to a leak/flood in the submarine. The vessel remained missing until 1995 when it was discovered on a diving expedition led by author Clive Cussler. The Hunley sat covered under several feet of silt, about 100 yards from where the USS Housatonic sank. It took five years of preparation to lift the vessel and bring it to Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, where scientists worked to preserve it for future generations.

The center is open on Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance or when you arrive. Adult admission costs $18. Discounts are available for senior citizens, students and active or retired military members.
