Spend your family travel time volunteering in Grenada. The Caribbean country recently launched a dedicated voluntourism program for visitors wanting to interact with the local community in a meaningful way. The program offers opportunities in several areas including agriculture, education, the environment and healthcare.
Agriculture
Spend time at Myristic Mountain tending to local horses, helping farmers with their crops and planting flora. Volunteer with the Annandale Community Project. Through the project, volunteers work at Annandale Community Garden by helping tend to all needs, from planting to teaching local children the importance of eating what you grow. Visitors may also opt to donate garden tools, greenhouse equipment and seeds.
Education
Consider donating to the Grenada Scholarship Program. The organization provides funding directly to the needs of marginalized local youth. The Mt. Rich Football Club accepts donations of equipment and time, for those able to coach and practice with the team. Get Swimming Grenada offers free swimming lessons to children and adults. The organization is always looking for volunteers to teach lessons.
Environment
Spend time on the beach participating in a beach cleanup. The maintenance helps remove waste and other threats to sea life and coral reefs. Through the Grand Anse Artificial Reef Project, volunteers assist with underwater cleanups, urchin and fish counts, cleaning and ID tag placements.
Healthcare
Visiting doctors can participate in the Medical Elective program in Grenada, offering training across a variety of medical concerns. The Grenada Down Syndrome Association hosts numerous events throughout the year, from holiday parties to athletic events. Volunteers may participate in a variety of ways including handing out meals at events or assisting in fundraising.
“For travelers, voluntourism provides an intimate and memorable experience which allows them to make deep and meaningful connections with our local community whilst leaving a positive footprint on the island,” said Petra Roach, CEO, Grenada Tourism Authority. “We want to connect through their hearts and passions, which will in turn increase their propensity to return to the island. We want to join together to be better global citizens and be intentional about ensuring a positive impact and bringing about positive change.”
